Justice of the peace candidates plentiful

EL PASO -- The eight justice of the peace positions in the county, which pay $63,500 a year, are a hot commodity in this year's election.

On the Republican side, three people are running for justice of the peace positions. On the Democratic side, 23 candidates are seeking the positions. Only one of the justice of the peace candidates, Ruben Lujan, is unopposed. Lujan, a Lower Valley businessman and community leader, will inherit the Justice of Peace, Precinct 6-1, next January.

Also, only two of the justice positions, Precincts 4 and 7, have both Republican and Democratic candidates. Those party primary winners will face off in November.

In the other justice of the peace offices, whoever wins the Democratic Party nomination, wins the seat. The party's primary is March 2.

Here is a complete list of who is running for justice of the peace. Some of the names were omitted from Tuesday's El Paso Times because they filed just before the deadline or because they filed by submitting a petition with the names of voters instead of paying the $1,000 filing fee.
