| Organization Basics |
| What does it mean to be non-partisan? |
Non-partisan means exactly what it states; El Paso Counts is an independent organization run without any political ideology or support. Our goal is to increase voter turnout, regardless of party affiliation, or lack thereof. |
| Can I join even if I'm just an indivdual? |
Certainly. El Paso Counts is open to all persons whether they come as individuals or as members of larger groups or businesses. Also, even if you are not a member of a large group now, you could start a larger group by encouraging friends and family to join with you. |
| Why should this method work as opposed to other means of trying to increase turnout? |
Other means of trying to increase turnout can be impersonal and imposing. This method is based around the fact that you will be encouraging people you know, your co-workers, friends and family, that they need to vote. Since they know you they are less likely to feet put upon, and so less likely to tune you and your message out. |
| Are there other ways to contact the organization than through the website? |
Yes. The telephone number for El Paso Counts is (915) 549-5893.
Or you can mail us at 521 Texas Ave. El Paso TX 79901 |
| Why vote? |
| Why should I vote? |
Voting is an essential part of any healthy democracy. Voting allows the population to provide their input on how a politician is performing, on what their community's priorities should be, or should not be. Voting is the citizen's way of putting a check on their government and guiding it to accomplish popularly supported goals. |
| There are too many elections, do I need to vote in them all? |
As a citizen with an interest in their community you should try to vote as often as you can, if possible voting in all elections. Many elections come as a result of having many layers of government in our society. However, each of these layers provides an important service to the community and it is equally important to express your input to them by voting. Consider the possible impacts each governmental body would have on you before you blow off an election. |
| How do I encourage others to vote? |
| What is the single most important thing I can do to encourage someone to vote? |
Make certain that they are well informed about the election, issues, and candidates far in advance of the actual vote. Giving them information and time well in advance will allow them to think about their decisions and make any necessary arrangements to vote such as obtaining an absentee ballot or determining their precinct's polling place. |
| What else can I do to help encourage turnout? |
Help people arrange transportation to and from the voting location, consistently remind people of the upcoming election, offer to watch someone's kids so that they can go vote, give people rides to the polling place if they could not make it themselves, don't let people make excuses for not voting, arrange for absentee ballots, never lose focus or give up on a potential voter. All of these things you can do to help encourage others to vote. |
